òòò½ÍøSP: Academics
Two Levels of Study
All students receive eight weeks of training in math, microeconomics, econometrics, and research methods with the leading economics faculty across American University. The program offers two academic levels to meet the needs of the participants:
"I feel better prepared for my first-year [PhD] courses and òòò½ÍøSP sparked a research idea I plan to pursue. I also met a great cohort of fellow students, fellows, professors, and other economists.” --Chika Okafor |
- The Foundation Level is designed for students exploring the possibility of graduate study and is particularly useful to students needing to enhance their mathematics and economics skills to successfully complete more advanced undergraduate courses that will lead to graduate training.
- The Advanced Level is designed for students seeking to hone advanced skills in mathematics and economics in order to facilitate placement and success in rigorous PhD programs.
Student placement across the two levels is based on individual assessment. Course descriptions can be found here.
Program Intensity
òòò½ÍøSP is an immersive and demanding experience designed to push students academically and intellectually. Participants should come prepared for long days, challenging material, and the occasional feeling of being stretched beyond their comfort zone—that’s what makes it intensive!
But challenge is only part of the story. òòò½ÍøSP also offers a supportive environment where students build lasting friendships, enjoy recreational activities, and develop a strong sense of community. No one goes through the program alone. Students collaborate in teams, forming bonds that often extend far beyond the summer. Faculty, graduate fellows, mentors, and staff are all dedicated to helping each student thrive.
The program's rigorous schedule means that full participation is essential. Students are expected to attend all òòò½ÍøSP courses, seminars, and excursions. Visitors can’t be readily accommodated, and leaves of absence are rarely granted and must be approved in advance.
